Booking more than one ticket for a journey to make the overall trip cheaper is called split ticketing.
You split the journey at points that mean the combined price of the tickets is less than if you were to book straight through.
A Times investigation by Consumer Affairs Correspondent Andrew Ellson along with Graeme Paton, Jack Myers noted that;
Long distance journeys can cost more than double the cumulative price of shorter trips along the same route...Travellers are entitled to split a ticket at any destination along a route at which a train stops and are not required to leave the train...So called ticket splitting is legal and just as convenient for passengers, who can stay on the same train and show different tickets to different inspectors.
It was just about 1/3 less expensive to travel from Nottingham to Falmouth Docks on the same trains if you split at Cheltenham Spa
Manchester to London Euston - ?119.10; saving ?218.90 (65%) on peak ?338.00 adult return
Glasgow to Leicester - ?79.30; saving ?41.70 (34%) on the off-peak ?121.00 adult single
So passengers could save money by buying not one ticket as advertised, but numerous tickets to inch them along their journey.
Trouble is, booking each segment of your journey separately is a very time-consuming process with customers having to play with different permutations of a journey to coax an official website into giving them a better deal so that is:
Two or more hours of staring at a screen
Noting down prices for each part of the proposed journey
Adding up prices and comparing to the through price
Revisiting the booking site with your workings
Booking your tickets
This is where the magic happens... At ticketclever we have come up with a smart algorithm that does this for you. No more staring at a screen for hours. No more using clunky systems to try and calculate your fare. ticketclever will often find you a saving, especially on longer routes. In a lot of cases you will be doing the same journey you usually do, you will just have more tickets in you hand. We call these ticketclever deals.
When you go to collect your ticket at the station, make sure you print out absolutely all your tickets, if one is missing you will not reach your end destination without a hefty fine. Boo. It is really important to collect all of your tickets, as you will not be able to use the receipt or anything to pass through stations otherwise.
ticketclever doesn't charge booking fees or credit/ debit card fees either, so you save even more!
