Cathays train station serves the Cathays district of central Cardiff and is a 1-minute walk from the Cardiff University Students' Union.

It's also 2 minutes' walk from the Main Building of Cardiff University. The Welsh Government building is 4 minutes' walk, and the National Museum Cardiff is 6 minutes' walk from the station. Buses from Park Place are a 1-minute walk and serve Heath, Birchgrove, Barry Island and Cardiff.

Trains for Barry Island leave every 15 minutes, and there are half-hourly trains to Cardiff Central, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Treherbert, plus hourly trains to Bridgend.

While both platforms are step-free, there is no facility for wheelchair users or persons with reduced mobility to cross between Platform 1 and 2 due to a steep footbridge.

Customers who have travelled from the Valleys and wish to access the University or the Civic Centre are advised to travel to Queen Street station, change onto a North-bound service and alight at Cathays on the return service.
